Safety with Professional Lead Abatement and Removal

Lead-safe, violation-free, fully documented

Lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978, but it remains in thousands of NYC apartments — on walls, window sills, doors and trim. When it deteriorates or is disturbed, it creates lead dust that is especially dangerous for young children. Exit Lead identifies where lead paint is present, removes or controls it safely, and provides the clearance results and paperwork owners need to stay compliant.

Regulations we work under: NYC Local Law 1 of 2004 (annual notice and hazard correction), NYC Local Law 31 of 2020 (XRF inspection of covered units), NYC HPD lead-based paint rules, NYC Health Code Article 173, and the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about lead abatement and removal in NYC.

How do I know if my building has lead paint?
The only reliable way is an inspection using XRF testing or paint chip sampling by a certified inspector. Buildings built before 1978 are most likely to contain lead paint, and risk increases with age.
What is NYC Local Law 31?
Local Law 31 required owners of pre-1960 residential buildings (and 1960–1978 buildings with known lead paint) to have covered units inspected for lead paint by a certified XRF inspector by August 2025.
How long does lead abatement take?
A single-apartment job typically takes a few days to two weeks, including containment, abatement, cleanup and clearance dust testing.
What happens after abatement?
An independent dust-wipe clearance test confirms lead dust is below the legal threshold. Once the unit passes, it can be reoccupied and related violations can be closed out.
