FAQs

Answers to Common Questions

Lead paint laws, inspection and abatement timelines, tenant relocation and more.

Do I legally have to remove lead paint in my building?
If your building was built before 1960 (or 1960–1978 with known lead paint) and a child under six lives there, NYC Local Law 1 requires the owner to investigate and correct lead paint hazards. Local Law 31 additionally required XRF inspection of covered units by August 2025.
What is NYC Local Law 31?
Local Law 31 required owners of pre-1960 residential buildings (and 1960–1978 buildings with known lead paint) to have units inspected for lead paint by a certified XRF inspector by August 2025.
What is NYC Local Law 1?
Local Law 1 requires owners of covered buildings to send tenants an annual notice asking whether a child under six lives in the unit, and to investigate and fix lead paint hazards.
How much does remediation cost?
Cost depends on the scope — how many rooms or surfaces are affected, the method used, and whether a violation or agency filing is involved. We provide a written, itemized quote after inspection.
Do tenants need to move out during the work?
It depends on which rooms are affected and the scope of work. Small, contained jobs may not require relocation; larger jobs often do. We’ll advise after the inspection.
What happens after lead abatement is complete?
An independent dust-wipe clearance test confirms lead dust levels are below the legal threshold. Once the unit passes, it can be reoccupied and related violations can be closed out.
Is Exit Lead licensed and insured?
Yes. Exit Lead is an EPA Lead-Safe certified firm with certified renovators, and we are licensed and insured to perform remediation work in New York City.
Which areas do you serve?
We’re based in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and serve all five NYC boroughs — Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
